On Doing Things That Terrify You

“Cause I know there’s got to be another level
Somewhere closer to the other side
And I’m feeling like it’s now or never
Can I break the spell of the typical, the typical?”

-Mutemath, Typical

Tomorrow, July 6, my friend (and training partner/coach) Zelyx and I will be hopping on a plane to Charlotte, NC.

We are going to this, a team tryout for Glenn Plendlay’s new Muscledriver USA team in Fort Mill, SC.

Up until May 2012, Coach Pendlay and his team were based at California Strength in San Ramon, CA. I had already been thinking about finding a way to visit there sometime when they announced that MDUSA was opening a new Olympic weightlifting training facility at their home base in South Carolina, and he and some of his team would be relocating.

THEN they announced the first round of team tryouts would be in early July. I wanted to go, but just couldn’t imagine driving 10 hours by myself to lift the next day. I’d decided I would have to wait, but a few weeks later Zelyx decided she wanted to go. Problem solved.

The stream of events leading up to this sort of defies imagination, so suffice to say: be careful what you wish for; intention is a powerful thing. This blog was the begininning of setting my course, and even though I have the lowest total of the female lifters, I am going to lift my heart out. My first competition had to happen sooner or later, why not now? This post from Coach Pendlay just confirmed my thoughts.

I’m borrowing one of Zelyx’s singlets, and I’ve been practicing cutting a few kilos because I want to lift in the under 63 kg weight class. Coach Victor let me max out last weekend to find the weights I should attempt in competition. I still end up “powering” (meaning not full-squatting under the lift) anything over about 40 kg, because though my hip is healing, rebuilding squat strength is slow and it’s a little temperamental.

Oh, and for extra fun, Coach Pendlay will be live-streaming the event here (also see below). Women begin lifting at 10am Eastern Saturday, July 7, followed by men at 1pm.  Another teammate, David Luk, is also lifting (and some of the women’s last names are mixed up on the start list I linked above.)

I’m not wasting any chance to learn.

  1. I am going out of town on Saturday, but I will see if I can catch any of your lifts. Go get'em, Lauren!

Do you know where Zelyx gets her singlets? Its hard to find stuff beyond the typical adidas.

  3. Thanks for your sharing. You efforts putting this blog together was worth the while. Nice work Lauren.
